What stands out about the work of established Spanish sculptor, printmaker and painter Jose Luis Sanchez is its almost poetic sense balance and rhythm, achieved using monochromatic materials and through exploring the concepts of space and volume. Influenced by the constructivist tendencies of the 1970s, Sanchez’s work is at once geometric and distinctly organic and fluid. Tilgman had 16 employees working for him and when he hired the Polish refugee Marian Zawadzki (1912-1978) as artistic director in 1953, Tilgman Keramik started experimenting with the distinct sgraffito technique. The sgraffito technique consists of carving fine lines into the background of a design through a light colored glaze down to a dark grey clay slip. This created a unique textured ground which has become a style associated with Tilgmans Keramik in particular. The decorative elements also appear to be outlined with a carved line and then hand painted with overglazes where birds, fish, flowers, butterflies and other animals were a common theme. This type of work was the most popular in midcentury Sweden alongside Tilgmans small animal figurines. In 1957, production is moved to a new factory in the same area with now 25 employees. In the mid-1960s, Tilgman had close to 80 people working for him and production change towards a darker, more rustic style and in 1971, Tilgman moved production to Londonderry, Ireland still with close collaboration with employees still working for him in Gothenburg. Harry Tillman died in Helsinki, Finland in 1974, and shortly after the factory closed down. Tilgmans Keramik remains some of the most popular and sought after artistic ceramic pieces in Scandinavia.

For 3 candles, partially glazed, painted gold-colored decor.

Good vintage condition.

A pair available. This superb mask is characterized by the purity of its lines and the powerful expression of its face. The best-known Yaoure masks depict human faces composed of zoomorphic elements. They belong to either Je or Lo society. With the help of these masks, the Yaoure hoped to influence the supernatural powers (yu) that could harm humans but also ensure their well-being. These masks are considered emblems of yu, extremely dangerous, to be handled with extreme caution, and kept away from women. Deaths that threaten the social order are the main reason for their appearance. With their dances, they restore the social balance of the community and accompany the deceased back to the ancestral world. This mask, with two horns projecting backwards, can be identified as a ram (bla), the animal representing power, vitality and fertility - essential abilities when the death of an important person jeopardizes the balance of the community.

African Baule statue Mother with child, Ivory Coast mid XXe century.

Depth : 22 cm - Width : 30 cm - Height : 68 cm.

Provenance: Swedish private collection, from the 1980s. The patterns and iconography that enhance individual works are carefully described to the artist by clan elders. The Sénoufo country is at the limit of disease areas affecting horses, the main one being sleeping sickness carried by a fly. The Senufo having difficulty raising this animal were further penalized by the raids of their northern Malinké neighbors who stole what was left of their meager herds. Thus, in the northern part of the Senufo country, owning a horse was a sign of power and wealth, depending on the rarity of the animal and the difficulty of keeping it. The horseman statue was not an object of worship, but rather a sign of reverence towards a notable. It was also not shown, but was part of a set of objects that were part of the sacred grove teaching to evoke a former dignitary. The figures of riders, generally small in size, represent exclusively men, with the exception of an amazon which is said to be an allegory of the mother of Samory.
