Nils Joakim Kähler was the fourth and last generation of the Kähler family at the head of the ceramics factory. In 1940 he took over the management together with his brother Herman Jørgen Kähler. Nils was instrumental in leading Kähler's Ceramic Workshop into the age of modernism, among other things by virtue of the simple salt-glazed stoneware ceramics he designed. His ceramics focused on form and material, and marked a move away from the company's traditional orientation towards colored glazes and decoration. Nils Kähler's ceramics also gained attention abroad. Among other things at the Louvre in Paris in 1958 and at the exhibition "The Arts of Denmark" in 1962 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where he exhibited together with other Danish design luminaries such as Kay Bojesen, Hans J. Wegner and Georg Jensen.
