Born in The Hague in 1931, Paul Kingma always wanted to be a sculptor. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam, then at the Royal Academy in London, where he was trained by the artist Maurice Lambert, an encounter that proved decisive for him.
He spent his life creating a multitude of bronze sculptures for public spaces in Utrecht and Amersfoort. However, his most remarkable work remains his exceptional compositions, which he began creating in the early 1970s. These creations take the form of wall panels and, above all, tables, a fascination that remained with him throughout the 1980s and 1990s. These “architecture tables,” “painting tables,” or “Kingma tables” were born out of the artist's admiration for the history of the earth and life in general.
Kingma was passionate about nature and travelled the world to find the materials that would make up his works: slate, schist, mineral colours. His tables are surprising assemblages of stones of various textures and colours, metals such as copper, brass, and steel, enamels, and sometimes even fossils or semi-precious stones. Each one evokes imaginary architectures, exotic topographies, or abstract paintings.
