Rey Urban, born September 14, 1929 in Stockholm, died February 8, 2015, was a Swedish silversmith and designer.
Urban began his studies at the metalwork department at Konstfackskolan in 1947 and graduated from the school's higher department in 1951, followed by a number of study trips to France, Germany, Brazil and England. He was employed by the corpus manufacturer Chor in Denmark but worked mainly in his own company Silversmeden Rey Urban, which he started during his training in 1950. He became a journeyman in 1953 and a master silversmith in 1955. Together with Claës E. Giertta he exhibited at Hantverkshuset in Stockholm and with Lars Fleming at Kalmar Museum. He participated almost annually in craft exhibitions at Hantverkshuset in Stockholm and was represented in craft exhibitions in Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki, New York, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Urban created practical and useful jewelry as well as tightly designed ornaments. Urban's designs combined craftsmanship with contemporary techniques. His incompatible works include candelabras and other silver objects for some 15 churches in Sweden. Urban is represented at the National Museum in Stockholm.
